EPS waste becomes a valuable raw material

2021.05.10

With funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), a project to explore the recycling of polystyrene waste is underway. The project has proved that the waste polystyrene products are converted into a valuable The feasibility of the raw materials to create a recycling economy model for polystyrene waste. The project also includes commercial and ecological evaluation of the recycling process.

The report concludes that depolymerization-the process of breaking down polystyrene-based materials into basic building blocks-is a very suitable polystyrene-based recycling solution, which will distill the output. In order to achieve further polymerization, food-grade recycled polystyrene can be produced.

The information disclosed so far indicates that expanded polystyrene (EPS) waste has been proven to be the most suitable raw material for the depolymerization process. This process can avoid polyolefin pollution generated during the regeneration process, while the “left over” flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) can be removed to a large extent, but traces of bromine still exist.
