What do you need to know about EPS insulation board?

2021.07.15

How is EPS insulation board produced?
EPS insulation board is made of bead-like expandable EPS resin containing foaming agent (pentane) as raw material. The particle size of the EPS beads is expanded from 0.5mm to 3-4mm by a foaming machine. After aging, the The molding machine is heated in the mold to form a white body with a fine closed-cell structure. Then cut into a certain size EPS insulation board according to user needs.

Why does EPS insulation board have efficient insulation performance?

EPS insulation board is a kind of thermoplastic material. It contains 3-6 million independent air-tight bubbles per cubic meter volume, and the volume of air contained is more than 98%. Because the heat conductivity of air is very small (0.029), and it is closed It is in foam and cannot be convective, so EPS is made into a material with very good thermal insulation performance.

What is ordinary EPS? What kind of flame-retardant EPS insulation board? What’s the difference?

Ordinary EPS insulation material has an oxygen index of less than 22. It will catch fire when it encounters an open flame, and it will become more and more prosperous. The combustion performance grade is B3 and it is a flammable material. In order to improve the fire resistance of EPS, in the ordinary expandable EPS resin, adding some flame retardants can greatly increase the oxygen index of EPS. According to different flame retardant properties and addition amount, flame retardant EPS is divided into B2 flame retardant EPS and B1 flame retardant EPS. Flame-retardant EPS is a self-extinguishing material, that is, flame-retardant EPS will also be ignited when exposed to an open flame, but will extinguish itself after leaving the fire source. Therefore, flame-retardant EPS is also called self-extinguishing EPS.

What is the oxygen index?

The oxygen index refers to the lower limit of the oxygen concentration required for a sample to maintain stable combustion in a mixed gas flow of oxygen and nitrogen under specified conditions, expressed as a percentage of the mixed volume of oxygen and nitrogen occupied by oxygen. The oxygen index is measured with an oxygen index meter.

The oxygen index is an expression method for evaluating the combustibility of plastics and other polymer materials. Because the atmosphere we live in contains only 21% of oxygen, that is, the oxygen index is 21. When the oxygen index of the material is greater than 26%, it is incombustible or non-flammable in ordinary air, so it is generally considered that the oxygen index <22 belongs to Flammable materials with an oxygen index between 22-27 are combustible materials, and an oxygen index> 27 is a flame-retardant material. In the 97 edition of “Building Material Combustibility Classification Method”, it is stipulated that the oxygen index of level B1 (flammable materials) is ≥26; the oxygen index of level B2 (combustible materials) is ≥32. What is graphite EPS insulation board?

Graphite EPS insulation board is a new generation of insulation material based on traditional EPS and further refined through chemical methods. The graphite EPS insulation board can reflect and absorb infrared rays due to the addition of special graphite particles, so that its thermal insulation performance is at least 30% higher than that of traditional EPS, the thermal conductivity can reach 0.032, and the combustion performance level can reach B1. Compared with traditional EPS, graphite EPS insulation board has stronger thermal insulation performance and fire resistance performance, and it is popular with people.
