What is EPS geofoam?

2021.09.24

Geofoam (GEOFOAM) is a foamed plastic product made of EPS as raw material. It has the characteristics of ultra-light weight, stable shape, elasticity, compression resistance, and low thermal conductivity. Under normal circumstances, EPS products have strong chemical stability, are insoluble in water, are not easy to age, are corrosion-resistant, resistant to microorganisms, and are not affected by climate change. They are used to prevent and control roadbed freezing damage, reduce roadbed settlement, and reduce lateral displacement of abutments. Plays an important role.

Geofoam has been used in the world for nearly 50 years. In 1972, the Norwegian National Road Research Laboratory was the first to use EPS technology for repairs on the approach roads of soft soil foundations in the suburbs of Oslo. In 1990, our country conducted the EPS board thermal insulation roadbed test in the Kunlun Mountain cross-ridge section of the Qinghai-Tibet Highway and applied it to the Chuma River approach road, the Hongliang River bridge approach road and the old hot spring area. In November 1994, the Zhejiang Provincial Transportation Design Institute established the EPS embankment research group, which was applied to the embankment of the Wangtong crossover bridgehead in Ningbo for the first time. Today, geotechnical foam has been widely used in engineering projects such as Ningbo-Taiwan-Wenzhou Expressway, Hangzhou-Nanjing Expressway, Shanghai-Nanjing Expressway, Shanghai F1, Disneyland, and Pudong Century Avenue reconstruction.
