A brief analysis of the main recycling ways of Expandable Polystyrene

Expandable Polystyrene is developing rapidly in China and is widely used in shock-proof packaging, architecture, decoration, tableware and so on.

However, most of EPS packaging is disposable consumables, which is not easy to degrade by itself after abandonment, which causes great pollution to the environment. Therefore, the development of EPS recovery, regeneration, regeneration has become the most urgent topic in the current EPS packaging industry. In recent years, the recovery and utilization of EPS waste in China has been paid attention to by the relevant departments, the government and other departments have strengthened marco guidance and orderly management, the corresponding legal guidance and policy support policies have been issued one after another, people’s awareness of resources and environmental protection has been improved, on the whole, China has made a lot of achievements in EPS recovery and utilization. For example, the processing of waste EPS to produce XPS, has become the main way of EPS recovery and utilization in China.

The cycling of waste polystyrene foam products can not only protect the environment, save energy, but also has good economic benefits.

At present, the method of the EPS recovery processing is generally as follows:

  1. Simple burial: this method is free of work, land, and no benefit;
  2. It is used as a fuel for incineration; although it can generate heat, it is a big investment;
  3. Using EPS recovery granulation equipment, after hot melting regeneration equipment, after regenerated t form PS particles. Then XPS, can be widely used in building materials by heating and melting adding foaming agent, flame retardant, nucleating agent and other auxiliaries. At present, this recycling technology has been widely popularized in China, and has become one of the main ways of EPS recovery and utilization;
  4. The waste EPS are decomposed into monomers, compounds, fuel and the like to be reused, so that the EPS can be recovered to be a closed-loop process. The method has the following advantages: the quality of the chemical raw material produced by the decomposition can be compared with the new material; in addition, the method has the potential of processing the waste in a large amount, so that the resource can be recycled, and the pollution of the real treatment EPS to the environment can be achieved. The process with the industrial potential in the present chemical recovery is cracking, vaporization, hydrogenation and pyrolysis. Although the chemical recovery is not novel from the reaction mechanism, all of them should be put into practical application, and many engineering problems need to be solved;
  5. After being crushed, the added material is used for making light-weight heat-insulating building material, such as EPS light concrete, cement polystyrene board, EPS foam hollow brick and EPS light roof heat-insulating board, etc., and is characterized in that the excellent heat-insulating property of the EPS foam is fully utilized;
  6. Other methods, such as the manufacture of rust-proof paint, the manufacture of multi-functional resin adhesive, the manufacture of impermeable and leakage repairable agent, and the use of asphalt reinforce, etc.
