A Hot Wire Foam Cutter is a electrical tool used to cut polystyrene (EPS, XPS) foams and similar materials. The device consists of a thin, taut cutting wire, often made of NiChrome, Titanium, Stainless steel, or a thicker wire preformed into a desired shape, which is heated via electrical resistance to appr. 500°C. As the cutting wire is passed through the material to be cut, the heat from the wire vaporises the material just in advance of contact.
NiChrome cutting wire has a unique characteristic: it heats up when electricity is applied. NiChrome Wire is the optimal cutting wire choice for polystyrene foam cutters (EPS, XPS) and CNC foam cutting machines for a variety of reasons, but particularly because it is resistant against corrosion and oxidation at very high temperature. The NiChrome cutting wire reaches the temperature of a few hundred Celcius degrees during cutting.
