The cushioning effect of foamed plastic EPS in collision

In the impact test, the experimenter will simulate the internal force of the helmet when it is impacted. A qualified helmet must keep the gravitational acceleration of its internal conduction energy within 300g. This must be achieved through the rupture or deformation of the EPS buffer layer. EPS converts a small part of the energy generated by the impact into heat, prolongs the energy transmission time, and reduces the peak energy reaching the head and brain.
Without helmet protection, when your head is hit, energy will be transmitted to your brain within 1 millisecond, and due to the presence of the EPS buffer layer, the conduction time will be extended to at least 6 milliseconds. Do not underestimate the time of these few milliseconds, which will determine whether the impact energy will cause life threatening or brain damage to the victim.
When EPS is used as the helmet cushion material, the energy transmission is relatively gentle, reaching a peak in about 6 milliseconds. When the rider is not wearing the helmet, the head will face the danger of strong impact.
According to the law of conservation of energy, the energy generated by the impact will not be absorbed by the EPS buffer layer, but only a small part of it will be converted into other forms of energy, such as thermal energy. You can use a heavy object to hit the surface of the EPS hard, and then you will find that the temperature of the surface of the EPS will increase, which is the energy that is converted into heat. Of course, if the impact contact surface is small, even though the impact force is very strong, you still can hardly feel the increase in the temperature of the EPS impact surface, but you can still feel the impact strength is weakening.
