In a subsea SURF transportation & installation project campaign, the deployment, loadout and mobilisation of the SURF always require large reel to carry and extend them when necessary.
One solution is using expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam, a lightweight foam plastic that's manufactured into blocks, has a unit density that can be roughly as low as one pound per square foot, it's an extremely lightweight alternative to soil that's nearly 100 times lighter than most soils, suitable for soft soil remediation, slope stabilization, lateral load reduction on retaining structures, structural void fill, and buried utility protection.
Expanded polystyrene (EPS) geofoam, is a form of lightweight thermal plastic produced in sheets or large blocks. Since it first hit the market more than 60 years ago, it has been used primarily for filling voids in soil created during construction projects like highways, bridge embankments, and parking lots.
