In 1950, BASF developed EPS. Because of its excellent thermal insulation performance, it was widely used in the construction field. Later, it was widely used in packaging because of its strong impact resistance.
The "Worm Skyscraper" designed by yong ju lee architects is an environmental protection project that explores the solution of plastic pollution. Expanded polystyrene, also known as "styrofoam", is not biodegradable. This means that single-use polystyrene cups may exist permanently, and therefore cause great harm to the environment.
With funding from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), a project to explore the recycling of polystyrene waste is underway. The project has proved that the waste polystyrene products are converted into a valuable The feasibility of the raw materials to create a recycling economy model for polystyrene waste. The project also includes commercial and ecological evaluation of the recycling process.
General grade polystyrene is a kind of thermoplastic resin, which is colorless, odorless, tasteless and lustrous, transparent bead or granular solid. The density is 1.04 ~ 1.09, the transparency is 88% ~ 92%, and the refractive index is 1.59 ~ 1.60. Under the action of stress, birefringence occurs, which is called stress optical effect. The melting temperature of the product is 150-180 ℃, the thermal decomposition temperature is 300 ℃, the thermal deformation temperature is 70-100 ℃, and the long-term service temperature is 60-80 ℃. After annealing treatment, the stress can be relieved and the hot deformation temperature can be increased. If a little α - methylstyrene is added in the production process, the heat resistance grade of general polystyrene can be improved.
